From Wednesday 14 August the Library will automatically renew anything you borrow, unless it is recalled. Automatic renewals do not apply to Short Loan items.

  • 4 week loan items are automatically renewed for up to 20 weeks for undergraduate students and 84 weeks for postgraduates and staff.
  • 3 day loan items are renewed for up to 33 days.
  • Short loan items will not be automatically renewed and overdue fines still apply.
  • These changes do not apply to Inter-Library Loan items.

You’ll get a courtesy email each time an item has been renewed and an email at the end of the auto-renewal time period to tell you when items need to be taken back to Library. At the end of the auto-renewal time, you will need to come along to one of the Library sites (Main Library, JF Allen Library or St Mary’s College Library) to hand it back in or ask Library staff to re-issue it to you.

Keep an eye on your email!

The due date for your items will continue to appear in your Library account, but you don’t need to do anything, the system will automatically renew them for you.

However, if something you have borrowed is recalled, please return it or fines will be applied: £2 per day up to a maximum of £20 per item.

Remember, this works both ways, if you need something, be sure to recall it!

We’ve also made other changes so it is easier to see how long you can keep items. ‘Normal loan’ (which meant you could keep an item for 4 weeks) and ‘multiple copy’ (which meant you could keep items for 1 week) will no longer be used, instead you will see: ‘4 WEEK’ or ‘3 DAY’. Short Loan will stay as before.

If you have any questions or would like more information about these changes, please email [email protected], or chat with us.
