Over the centenary commemorations of World War One, broadcasters have produced a vast array of programs exploring the war, including documentary series, drama, music and cinema.   Using Box of Broadcasts, the Library at the University of St Andrews is in the process of creating an archive of these programs.
The archive currently contains over 400 programs including:

  • Voices of the First World War – a ten-part series presented by Dan Snow On BBC Radio 4.  Using archive sound recordings from the BBC and Imperial War Museums, this series investigates the war through the voices of veterans.  A new series will be broadcast each year, matching voices to events.
  • British Art at War – a three-part series in which  Andrew Graham-Dixon explores how three British Artist, Paul Nash, Walter Sickert and David Blomberg, responded to the cataclysm of World War One.
  • The Great War: The People’s Story –  100 years after the outbreak of the First World War this series of four dramatised documentaries uses the diaries and letters of those caught up in the conflict.
  • The Great War In Colour – a series of three programs which takes images from the Albert Kahn archive to show the war, most often portrayed in black and white, in colour.
  • BBC dramas The Crimson Field and The Village
  • BBC Radio dramas Home Front and Tommies

Archived programs and clips on BoB can be accessed by any subscribing UK institution .  For convenience the programs have been organised into playlist on BoB, and all playlists are prefixed with “St A WW1”.  To find a program from the archive use the Search function and search by the title, or click the “Playlist” radio button and enter St A WW1 to see all the available playlists.
