Research Computing Network Update
Thank-you to everyone who viewed and shared our post calling for information on the development of software for research at St Andrews, and particularly to those who submitted details.
There is now a mailing list for the St Andrews Research Computing Network – you can sign up online or by emailing [email protected] with the subject “subscribe rescomp-network”.
We’ve had responses from across the University. Unsurprisingly, the School with the most responses has been Computer Science, with Mathematics & Statistics, Physics & Astronomy, Psychology & Neuroscience and CREEM also well represented. We also had responses from Geography & Geosciences, History, Philosophical, Anthropological & Film Studies and from IT Services. Though it wasn’t explicitly captured in form submissions, it is clear that the respondents hold a variety of roles at the University.
We’re very pleased with the enthusiasm that has been displayed for this initiative and are considering how to proceed – stay tuned.
In the meantime, there are a few things that may be worth your attention.
- Late last year Knowledge Exchange ran a workshop on Research Software Sustainability, and the outcomes are now available in a report. It is well worth reading, covering the importance of software to research, in particular reproducible research, and how such software can be made sustainable. This involves cultural shifts on the parts of funders, institutions and others as well good practice on the part of developers.
- The Software Sustainability Institute‘s Research Software Engineers campaign is looking for evidence to support their work. Please take a moment to complete their survey.
- This year’s Digital Humanities at Oxford Summer School will be running 4-8th July and offers training to anyone with an interest in Digital Humanities.
- Cambridge Big Data are running a collaborative workshop on 26 May with the title “Scalable Data Processing for Big Data from Laptop, Multi-core, to Cluster Computing”.
