28th October 1859:

Friday. The Boatswain and two more men came for things to our ship, the Hercyna was getting underway then. he was nearly drunk then stopped aboard our ship an hour, we kept perswading him to go but he would not hurry and by that he went ashore again and lost his ship

More trouble with the Boatswain! Now he’s missed his berth on the Hercyna - the ship sailed without him. What a fool. Will the Captain help him out a second time or leave him to his fate in Rio?
