Day 230. Flying fish and salt horse: a seafaring tale
17th March 1860:
Saturday 17th. Sailed the Garland of Valparaiso.
St Patrick’s Day. Firing off Guns and letting off sky rockets and bluelights at night. Arrived the Malakoff of St Johns N.B.
A celebration for St Patrick’s Day to liven up proceedings for the men waiting to take on guano. Must have been plenty of Irishmen amongst the various crews around the islands that day.Perhaps a drop or two of ship’s run was taken as well as the fireworks and flares.
