Day 262. Flying fish and salt horse: a seafaring tale
18th April 1860:
Wednesday 18th. Fishing. caught plenty of Macrel. Went out half way to Pisco after the Deodar a Scotch Bark but did not overtake her. we were pulling about 3 hours. dark when we got aboard.
Another hard day’s work! Fishing, messing about in the boat trying to outrun the Deodar - perhaps there was some whisky aboard her! She was from Dundee, owned by Thomson - very likely to be be William Thomson, shipping magnate and father of David Couper Thomson who established the publishing firm DC Thomson, owners of the Dundee Courier newspaper and comics such as The Beano and The Dandy.
There’s also a note at the top of the page saying Dated wrong from 20th to June 1st, so we will have to watch the dates upcoming and try and stay in synch.
