Day 267. Flying fish and salt horse: a seafaring tale
23rd April 1860:
Monday 23. Arrived 8 or 9 ships which I do not know the names.
It’s a pity Richard hasn’t noted the names of this new avalanche of ships - guano really was popular! It wasn’t the scenery or the fabulous food that was drawing them to the Chincha Islands, but the huge demand for guano as a fertiliser in Europe.
Though not everyone was in favour - the writer of the note below from a local estate here in Fife was unimpressed.
