8th May 1860:
Tuesday 9th. Ashore all the morning, the hands on board, getting the ship ready for sea. Came off, got our dinner’s and made sail. The Kensington sailed 3 or 4 hours before us. Goodbye to Callao, for we are Homeward Bound. Had a nice breeze. 10 PM the breeze freshened.
There’s just a touch of excitement in that phrase ‘Homeward Bound’. The ship is shipshape and ready to sail, just another few months at sea and they will be home with their valuable cargo of guano. Let’s hope it’s an easy journey - they still have Cape Horn to face a second time and storms can arise at any time. But for now Richard seems glad to be back at sea and heading home.
