10th May 1860:

Thursday 11th. Loosed M Royal and Mizn T.G. Sail at 8 AM. Hands Scraping and Oiling masts. I greased the F.T. Mast, Jibs and F Jib stays. Going 5 ½ knots at 12 AM. Split the jib and bent the other one 2 to 4 PM.

We’re all going to have to brush up on our names of sails and masts - after all those months in dock, I’ve certainly forgotten some of them. Richard knows what he is talking about by now.
