12th May 1860:
Saturday 13th. Rigged the new Spanker Boom and bent the new Spanker. 10 to 12 AM. Put the Hawsers down below. A ship hove in sight right astern. overhauling us fast. At 4 PM she Passed us to Windward she proved to be the Bremen of Bremen a splendid ship and very fast.  Washed decks 4 to 6 PM. 10 PM rather squally took in all the light sails and single reefed the Mizn Topsail. Going about 8 ½ knots. Continued squally all night. Steering South all night.
They had met the Bremen back at the Chincha Islands - it was a fast steamship and passenger liner belonging to Norddeutscher Lloyd, hard to imagine it would have been picking up guano. It has it’s own fanclub here. It was actually built in Scotland, by Caird & Co, Greenock.
