Day 287. Flying fish and salt horse: a seafaring tale

13th May 1860:

Sunday 14th. Set T Jib and Top Gallant. Sails 6 to 8 AM. A ship the War Hawk of Boston US in sight to leeward passed us before noon. 12 AM Set M. Royal and T.Gallant Staysail shook Reef out of Mizn Topsail. Going 7 ½ at 12 AM. Steering S. and S and by W ½ W. Pumps carefully attended. Squally all day. 

The War Hawk is another ship that came to a sticky end, a wooden clipper which caught fire in 1883. But a logbook from 1856-1857 still exists.
