Lovely locks

Another Maitland Dougall find is this charming record of the hair of a whole generation. These locks are taken from the 12 children of James Heriot Maitland and his wife Margaret Dalgleish. James Makgill, the youngest of the siblings, was born in 1837, so this may date from around then as he wouldn’t have had enough hair for a lock just yet.

Two of the children, Isabella Louisa and Charlotte Mary, feature prominently in the archive. They married 2 brothers, Henry and Frederick King, of Fryern, Storrington, in Sussex. Tragically, Isabella died shortly after giving birth to a son in 1854.
