Day 296. Flying fish and salt horse: a seafaring tale
22nd May 1860:
Tuesday 23rd. All hands wore ship at 4 AM. 10 AM Set the T.G Sails. and F. Jib. The Halliards carried away - rove new ones. 6 PM Shook the reef out of M. Topsail. 10 PM stowed F. and Mizn T.G Sails and F. Jib. Pumps carefully attended. Lat 30.31. Going 6 knots.
Getting a bit windy again. Other ships had trouble round about here. A letter from the Cheape of Rossie collection tells of the fortunes of Cheape family members wrecked along this coast in 1741, with David Cheape held by the Spaniards at Santiago in Chile, while his brother George lost a son to scurvy.
