Day 298. Flying fish and salt horse: a seafaring tale
24th May 1860:
Thursday 25th. Shook 1 reef out of the Topsails, std T. G. Sails and F Jib. 4 PM Stowed the 3 T.G. Sails and F. Jib and double reefed the 3 Topsails and Spanker. 9 PM Stowed Crossjack. Very Heavy dirty weather. Rolling heavily and shipping heavy seas the decks up to the knees with water always, which runs from one side to the other with the motion of the ship. Blowing hard and raining all night. Pumps Carefully attended 12 PM the M Topmast stay carried away from the Mast. Going 8 knots.
