Day 305. Flying fish and salt horse: a seafaring tale
31st May 1860:
Thursday June 1st. Washed decks. Set F. Topmast. Stern Sail. 8 to 12 PM. Took all the light sails. The Watch had just got warm in their beds when all hands reef Topsails was the cry. It was bitter cold too. we double reefer the three and stowed Crossjack and Jib. the wind still ahead. Sea Boots were not much use, there was so much water on deck. I got mine nearly full.
