Friday June 1st. tacked ship at 8 AM. but she did nothing but drift to leeward. set up Mizn Topmast and Jib Backstays in the morning. sent down the M. Royal yard in the afternoon which I was not sorry for. as it was not very pleasant mounting up there this cold weather. A nasty head sea on the ship pitching fearfully. Shook 1 reef out of M. Topsail and set Crossjack and Jib. a bitter black frost to night like cutting you in two, on deck, what we call cold is when you have to ask someone if your nose is on or off.
At last we are back on the right date, it really is 1st June on aboard. they must be far south now as it is bitterly cold and Richard complains much more than he did on the way out.
