Day 322. Flying fish and salt horse: a seafaring tale
17th June 1860:
Sunday 17th. Becalmed. Sighted a vessel about 9 miles to windward at 8 AM. Pumps carefully attended. the young pigs suck well. At 8 PM when we went to put them to the sow they were all nearly starved to death. They would not suck we put them before the stove in the Cabin but having no milk to give them they all died but one, during the night. The old sow kicking up a terrible shine when they was taken away. The sick man still the same. Very cold with Snow.
A pig tragedy, to be blamed on the Captain for mismanagement of the little piglets.
