Day 323. Flying fish and salt horse: a seafaring tale
18th June 1860:
Monday 18th. The ship we saw yesterday dead ahead a distance of about 3 miles. At daybreak we thought it was the Kensington the Capt signalized, but we could not distinguish her signals. Therefore we did not get to know. This day calm, dull. Cloudy and Frosty weather, very cold. Pumps carefully attended. Heading N.N.E.
Who is the mystery ship? They were hoping to see their old friends on the Kensington but it was not them. Early use of the word signalized too, if that is indeed a word at all.
