23rd June 1860:
Saturday 23rd. The same still raining heavily. Rainy weather is the worst for a sailor, for he is obliged to be on deck and perhaps to have to be at work in the whole of it, everything being wet he touches whereas if it is dry, no matter how cold he can keep himself warmer, and his clothes are dry upon him. 2 PM. Fell nearly calm and continued so during the night. The wind dead ahead and has been a long time now so that we make very little Northing, and I am afraid shall make a long passage home. Pumps carefully attended.
Richard is again being more reflective than usual - he is growing up. He is also anxious about their lack of progress, probably itching to get home now that they are on the way.
