Day 334. Flying fish and salt horse: a seafaring tale
29th June 1860:
Friday 29th. This morning sharp frosty air 10 of the vessels in sight not far distant. Let reef out of Spanker. Sent main Royal yard aloft and set the sail. Signalized the Kensington. all well aboard of her. She was too far off to distinguish any one. Tacked ship at 4 PM, 8 PM and again at 5 AM this morning - Lat 48″-0″ S. Long 54″-20″ W.
They have caught up with old friends the Kensington, which had left the guano islands just before the Philanthropist. They exchange the good news that both have survived Cape Horn and are set fair for home. Richard is disappointed though that they are too far away to make out any of his friends.
