Day 352. Flying fish and salt horse: a seafaring tale
17th July 1860:
Friday 17th. It still continues very stormy attended with heavy rain and Thunder and Lightning at 2 PM. set Jib, Main Topmast staysail, Mainsail, Cross Jack and Spanker. 3 PM the Jib stay carried away a little below the Collar, and away went the sail to Leeward, flapping and slashing the water with great violence. the ship was run off the wind, and the heads of the sail hauled in to the Boom by the downhaul, five hands were soon on the Boom, and had it picked up and stowed in a short time, the stay was spliced again and ready for setting up the first opportunity, the wind strengthening, stowed Cross Jack, Spanker and Mainsail, having got that done the Maintopmast Staysail blew to ribbons.
