Database trials – Historical News Sources

The Library currently has trial access to three databases:

African Newspapers Series I and II, 1800-1925

Through eyewitness reporting and editorials,  letters, poetry, advertisements, matrimony and death notices, this unique collection of 60 titles, chronicles the evolution of cultures and countries across Sub-Saharan Africa during a time of drastic change. From repercussions of the Atlantic slave trade, life under colonial rule and the results of the Berlin Conference, to the emergence of Black journalism, the Zulu Wars and the rejection of Western imperialism, these newspapers provide a wide range of viewpoints on diverse cultures.  The trial ends on 31st July 2022.

South Asian Newspapers, 1864-1922

South Asian Newspapers, 1864-1922, includes 10 newspaper titles published in India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, covers the aftermath of the Indian Rebellion; construction of railroads; effects of British Colonial rule; Hindu-Muslim conflicts; life on coffee, tea and rubber plantations; Morely-Minto Reforms; formation of the Indian National Congress; start of Mahatma Gandhi’s independence movement; economics, politics, and the arts. Offering a variety of perspectives, the important newspapers in this collection are ideal for comparing and contrasting views on both local and global issues.  The trial ends on 31st July 2022

Shen Boa Digital Archive

Shen Boa (also known as Shenjiang xin bai, or Shenjiang New Post, or Shanghai News) was established in 1872, and was the most influential and long-lasting commercial newspaper until the establishmnt of the People’s Republic of China in 1949, when it ceased publication.  It contains over 2 million full-text articles, searchable in Chinese and English, a full page view is available alongside the text in Chinese or translated to English.  The trial ends of 20th July 2022.
