Summer works in the Main Library

Having opened Level 1 in time for the revision period, you may have seen that the new space in the Main Library was closed for two weeks. This was so that planned works could be carried out by the contractors, while trying to minimise the disruption to our users.

We’re very happy to say that these works have now been completed and Level 1 is now available for use again, though the contractors are busy finishing off other tasks behind the scenes so there may still be some disruption.

Some of the recently completed works include:

  • adding more single user study carrels.
  • installing new doors for the postgraduate area, as well as out to the corridor, all of which are now self-opening, making them quieter and more accessible.
  • adding noise dampening baffles to the ceiling around the air condition system to improve quiet running.

Elsewhere in the Main Library, we’re excited to say that work is now underway to install two astronomical spheres for display, as well as the installation of a new intelligent hold-shelf, both of which we’ll provide more information about soon.

The team is also hard at work transferring collections to the new shelving area on Level 1: dictionaries, reference items, music scores and periodicals are all in process of moving. There will be some minor disruption on the other floors as we complete follow-up moves, allowing the collections room to breathe and grow.

Access to the collections will remain unchanged while these works continue and, as always, we’re happy to help with any enquiries.

We’d also like to thank everyone who completed the recent online feedback survey about Level 1. We have another blogpost coming soon looking at the results, and answering some of your questions…
