Waterworks at the Main Library

Wednesday 10 April 2024

As you may know, the Main Library had to close early on Tuesday 9 April 2024, and we wanted to provide some information about what happened. Simply put, the building’s water supply shut down, which meant we were not able to keep the Main Library open for users.

Library staff became aware of the issue in the late afternoon and, hoping to minimise disruption for our users, we initially remained open while staff contacted an on-call plumber to come and assess the situation. We advised building occupants of the issue, and provided information on alternative toilet facilities in nearby buildings, as well as other study space options.

There was no immediate danger to Library users at any time, but we do of course have a responsibility to provide decent toilet, washing, and drinking water facilities. Once it became clear that the water could not be reinstated quickly, the decision was made, alongside colleagues in other departments, that the building should close. All users were escorted out calmly and safely by 6:30 in the evening.

We are keenly aware that, especially during the revision period, suitable study spaces and minimum disruptions are vital to our student population, which is why the decision was not taken lightly. We do of course apologise for the early closure, and thank you for your understanding. It was simply unavoidable.

Thank you also to our colleagues who stayed onsite throughout the evening to allow the plumber to continue working. The water supply has now been restored to the Main Library, and we reopened from 8am this morning. Colleagues from Estates and additional plumbers are on site this morning to investigate the issue further, and to identify any work that may be needed to stop this from happening again.

Thank you again for your understanding. If you have any queries, please get in touch [email protected]
